CAPCOM didn't know just how well Ultra Street Fighter II would do when they adapted it for the Nintendo Switch. It was a big gamble, but following the E3 announcements about the success of the Switch, it was one they were clearly willing to take.
And what a great gamble it was. According to Wall Street Journal writer Takashi Mochizuki, the sales exceeded even CAPCOM's expectations.
Capcom: 450K is 1Q figure for Ultra Street Fighter II, above its expectation. Also "starting to prepare" multiple Switch-version titles.
So not only did they sell more than expected, but they are now preparing further titles for conversion to Switch. I don't really blame them. Evidently there is still a market for these nostalgic popular titles, albeit in a new format. It speaks to Atari making a comeback and old consoles being remade with modern technology. Even mobile games are going retro.
Instead of moving forwards, we're going backwards. Do we simply enjoy the simplicity of it all? Do fond memories of old games really entice us to play games more than modern releases? Whatever it is, expect CAPCOM to be releasing more old titles in the months to come. Personally, I'm hoping for a return to Resident Evil 2 on the Switch with some added content. What about you?
