More Impressions: Square-Enix's Avengers Game

We’re riding on the E3 Hype Train!

Square-Enix has come forward with a trailer for a title based on Marvel's The Avengers franchise. The game, currently titled Avengers is in development by Crystal Dynamics (Known for Gex the Gecko and the recent Tomb Raider games) and Eidos Montreal (Known for Deus Ex) for a 2020 release on Google Stadia, Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The project, first announced in January 2017, had very little seen or spoken about until recently.

Based on Marvel's premiere superhero team, the game, which will be in the action-adventure genre, looks like it will be visually based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe versions of the characters, but the storyline will not be beholden to that continuity. The trailer showed the Avengers opening up a new facility in San Francisco on "A-Day"... but the celebration is ruined with an assault by bad guys, seemingly lead by classic Avengers villain Taskmaster.

The Golden Gate bridge is attacked, a Helicarrier is shot of the sky.... Who is the mastermind behind this assault? With an entire Marvel Universe to play with, could we be expecting to see classic villain groups like The Hand, HYDRA, AIM or The Mandarin's goons? Maybe The Masters of Evil? Is the San Francisco setting hinting at The West Coast Avengers?

Captain America supposedly dies in the attack. The Avengers are disbanded and superheroes are outlawed. 5 years later, the Avengers must pick up the pieces and reassemble....

Classic Avengers mainstays Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow have been confirmed, as well as Hank Pym (who has worn many superhero guises, notably the first Ant-Man) but it is as of yet unknown if other prominent Avengers like Vision, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver, Wonder Man, War Machine or Falcon (and many others!) or possibly if other popular super-heroes like The Fantastic Four, Wolverine and Spider-Man will be seen.

Voice actors Nolan North, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, Travis Willingham, Jeff Schine have been confirmed on the project in the roles of Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor and Captain America respectively.

With the recent release of Avengers Endgame being the 2nd highest grossing film of all time, the Avengers franchise is on a high right now. Will the Avengers game deliver? Stay tuned to Game Tyrant, we will report more information as it develops!
