A Sequel To ROCKET LEAGUE Is Unlikely Says The Developer

Initially launched back in 2015, Rocket League proved to be an instant success as it introduced a unique concept of soccer and vehicles in the playing field. Currently, the game was able to garner a whopping 45 million registered players, with a consistent number of 6 to 7 million playing each month. Of course, given the Rocket League's on-going success, it is normal to expect that a sequel is on the way. However, the game’s director Scott Rudi revealed that a follow-up on the original game is unlikely for now.

Rudi discussed with GameSpot that Psyonix plans to treat Rocket League as a platform. Instead of making a full sequel, the developer intends to just allocate a significant number of resources into the game by consistently introducing new content to the game.

“That’s preferable to do; games-as-a-service,” Rudi said. “The most valuable thing in our game is our fans. A lot of the stuff we do is focused on keeping them with us. Keeping them interested and all hyped up about our game. We want to provide a really good experience [for players] to have fun with for years to come.”

Rudi also believes that a sequel to Rocket League wouldn’t make much sense as they rather keep things going than creating a brand new game. “We want to keep this going. I don’t know what I’d do with Rocket League 2. I’d rather do more to expand the existing Rocket League. It’s doing great, there is a lot ahead of it. So yeah, we have no plans for Rocket League 2.”

In other Rocket League news, the game is celebrating its third anniversary with an event on July 9. The celebration will introduce a new 3v3 Anniversary playlist together with a Happy Birthday topper available in the game.

Rocket League is available for the PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
