Event Spotlight: Omega II
After last weekend’s explosive action at Smash’N’Splash 4, many Super Smash Bros. Melee fans might be disappointed that the next major isn’t until CEO 2018 at the end of the month. If you’re looking for interesting sets featuring top-level talent from a multitude of regions, however, look no further: OMEGA II is next weekend’s SSBM event to watch.
The second iteration of an annual Long Island regional, OMEGA II will be taking place on June 16–17 at AON Gaming in Deer Park, New York. While the first OMEGA was stacked in its own right, won by James “Swedish Delight” Liu and featuring most of tri-state’s top talent, OMEGA II promises to be even more exciting, with out-of-region talent such as MD/VA’s Zain “Zain” Naghmi, Spain’s Roberto “Overtriforce” Iglesias and Álvaro “Trif” García, Minnesota’s Charlie “AbsentPage” McKinley, and many more. Currently, an eye-popping twelve top 100 players are registered for the regional, along with plenty of former and future SSBMRank members.
Though Zain is ostensibly the favorite to win the event, it won’t be a cakewalk for him, as players who have shown themselves able to defeat him in the past, such as Arjun “Junebug” Rao and Rishi “Rishi” Malhotra, will be present. The event’s highest-seeded tri-state representative, Anthony “Slox” Detres, will also be vying for first place.
The tournament’s rewards shop is still open, featuring potential bonuses such as a 24-hour venue or a plane ticket for Justin “Syrox” Burroughs to attend the event. The last time Syrox attended a tri-state event, he placed 9th after losing to the unranked Sheik Jason “Just Jason” DiMicelli. If his flight is funded, he’ll get a shot at redemption, though not a complete one, as Just Jason has not yet registered to compete at the regional.
If you’re interested in competing, registration for OMEGA II will be open until the end of this week. Currently, 113 players have signed up to compete, but that number is sure to grow as the registration deadline approaches.
