Everything you need to know for Get On My Level 2019

In a few days, the world’s finest Super Smash Bros. players will travel to Toronto for Get On My Level 2019, the sixth iteration of Canada’s longest-running major tournament series. With over 1,300 confirmed attendees, this year’s GOML is shaping up to be the biggest Super Smash Bros. tournament in Canadian history.

Whether you’re a spectator or attendee, here’s all the information you need to make the most of the event.

The storylines

Featuring stacked brackets in every Smash title, along with competitions in Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter V, and Tekken 7, Get On My Level 2019 is brimming with players hoping to make a splash on the international stage.

On the Melee side, Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma will be going in with a chip on his shoulder following his stunning double-elimination at the hands of Zain “Zain” Naghmi at Come to Papa 3. But Zain will also be in Toronto this weekend, and the Panda Global athlete will look to pivot-tipper his way to a win streak over the world No. 1. Furthermore, both Joseph “Mang0” Marquez and Justin “Plup” McGrath are threats whose presence will threaten Hungrybox’s bid for a second consecutive GOML title.

Get On My Level also represents the return of Melee’s prodigal son: William “Leffen” Hjelte, who announced the end of his career as a serious Ultimate player following Pound 2019 last month. This tournament is an opportunity for the Team SoloMid member to show that he still has what it takes to contend with the best in Melee—that he’s the same old Leffen who went on a four-god bracket run to win the whole event in 2016.

Get On My Level’s Ultimate bracket is chock-full of heavy hitters as well. So far, seven players have won an Ultimate major in North America, and all but one will be in Toronto this weekend. That means established contenders like Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez Perez, Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey, and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby will be battling it out against a swarm of very capable up-and-comers to top Ultimate’s 846-player field.

Once celebrated as the clear leaders in the race for Ultimate dominance, both MkLeo and Tweek have suffered disappointing losses recently, both failing to place within the top four at their last three events. In the most even playing field in competitive Smash history, no single player currently holds a claim to world No. 1 position; Get On My Level is an opportunity for one competitor to raise himself above his peers. Who wants it the most?

Beyond its history as a hype Smash major, Get On My Level’s growth is a great sign for the scene at large. This year, Even Matchup Gaming, the tournament organizers, have developed key partnerships with sponsors like Nintendo, BenQ, and Red Bull to ensure that attendees have the best possible player experience. With thousands of competitors in attendance, GOML will be flush with high-quality setups to ensure a great friendlies experience.

The details

The tournament will go down between Friday, May 17 and Sunday, May 19 at the Better Living Centre, located at 195 Princes’ Boulevard in Toronto, Ontario. For a full breakdown of the schedule, check out this handy Google Doc.

Though competitor registration for the event is closed, spectators are more than welcome to register online or purchase passes at the door. Three-day passes run for $50, while one-day passes are priced at $30; you can grab ‘em online at smash.gg. Keep in mind that swapping passes is not permitted, so if you’re rolling through with a crew, make sure everyone has their own pass!

And if you can’t make it person, don’t despair: GOML will be running multiple Twitch streams to ensure that online spectators are able to catch the most exciting matches. Even Matchup Gaming’s primary stream will be running all weekend, with side streams on twitch.tv/evenmatchupgaming2, twitch.tv/evenmatchupgaming3, and twitch.tv/evenmatchupgaming4  In addition to these streams, you can follow the event on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to stay on top of the action.

Whether you’re a Smash veteran or simply looking to get into the game, Get On My Level 2019 is a can’t-miss event. If you’re spectating from afar, make sure you’re free on Sunday night to catch the finals—and if you’re anywhere near Toronto, it’s not too late to purchase a spectator pass and take part in this historic moment for Canada’s Smash scene.
