First Impressions: TEKKEN 7 Gameplay

"There's only so much you can say about it" -Joey Paur, 2016

This is pretty true for both good and bad reasons when it comes to Tekken 7. The series has always been known for it's high quality so it's not like anyone expected this game to be bad, but what does it do to change itself from past installments?

In our short demo we learned a couple things....

1. D-Pad remains primary control method.
2. There's this new "rage mode" that allows you even the odds when at low health.
3. Game looks gorgeous.

Let's go back to #2 for a bit. If I'm being completely honest, I think the rage mode is a bit overpowered. A player can go from 30% health (which is when the skill becomes available) and immediately even the odds, or get an instant unblockable KO. It's a feature that seems fun when you're going through story mode, but awful when it's being used against you in a competitive or online setting. In all honesty, I'd be happy if there was a way to disable it for more competitive games.

Which then takes away one of the key things that sets this apart from any other Tekken game. That can be a good or bad thing depending on your opinion of the franchise.

That said, the way the game handles, fluidity in gameplay, and graphics cannot be understated. This game gives you the graphical upgrade that Street Fighter V opted out of, and, in my opinion, it looks the better of the two.

Final thought I think it's a classic Tekken for classic fans. Let's just hope they can disable that rage mode! It's cool but it's cheap beyond belief.
