According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is set to release 2 new versions of its popular hybrid console. One new version of the Switch hardware will target core gamers with more powerful similar to what Sony and Microsoft have done with their enhanced consoles. The source of these reports did however state that Nintendo’s upgrades won’t be as powerful as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.

“You would be wrong to think the enhanced version is similar to what Sony did with PS4 Pro.”

The second new iteration of the Switch looks to capture the handheld market with a low cost version of the hardware. This version of the system is set to be a replacement for Nintendo’s own 3DS console whose impressive 8 year life cycle seems to finally be drawing to its conclusion.

“The other is just a cheap alternative that looks very similar to some past hand-held machines, say, Sony’s PlayStation Vita.”

Both new versions of the Switch hardware are said to be vastly different to the current model that has been on store shelves for the past 2 years. I personally find the idea of both Switch versions to be very appealing as long as they can both run the same games like a PS4/PS4 Pro can. Having the higher end version for TV play and a more compact handheld mode sounds like a perfect combination. Well, as long as Nintendo’s cloud saves work properly that is. Both new models could appear as early as summer 2019.
