JAY AND SILENT BOB: CHRONIC BLUNT PUNCH PAX West 2024 Preview - Ripped Out Of A Comic Book

Gameplay

Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch (CBP) is a side-scrolling beat-em-up arcade game that truly feels like it's been ripped straight from the pages of a comic book, thanks to its hand-drawn graphics. And who better to capture this vibe than your favorite stoners, Jay and Silent Bob? Honestly, I wanted to try CBP mainly because I grew up loving the Clerks movies—and let's face it, who doesn’t enjoy a good beat-em-up? I expected the game to have average gameplay carried by nostalgia alone, but I was completely wrong.

This two-player experience blends everything I love about classic arcade button-mashers, with a refreshing twist. Packed with references from the Jay & Silent Bob universe, you’ll be kicking butt while laughing along the way. Even if you're unfamiliar with the movies, the game’s combat is seriously fun. It combines traditional beat-em-up mechanics with more complex fighting game elements, where each character has unique combo moves.

As for content, it currently looks like Jay and Silent Bob are the only playable characters, though there are hints that more may be added in the future. Honestly, I’d be fine if they didn’t—sticking with Jay and Silent Bob feels perfect for this game.

Expectations

Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch offers not only awesome combat but also a treasure trove of fun references for fans of the duo’s universe. From what I experienced in the demo, the combat is a standout feature, blending classic beat-em-up action with a dash of creativity. However, like many games in this genre, there's always the risk that the gameplay could feel repetitive over time. Beat-em-ups are notorious for that, after all.

That said, I’m optimistic that Chronic Blunt Punch will avoid falling into that trap. The game includes progression elements, which should help keep things fresh as you unlock new abilities and strategies. Plus, I’m confident that the variety of bosses and enemies will offer enough challenge and uniqueness from level to level. If the full game continues to build on the promise of the demo, it’s unlikely to become a repetitive grind. Instead, it could deliver the right mix of fun combat and nostalgic charm to keep players hooked all the way through.

Verdict

Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch is a delightful surprise, in my opinion. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the movies or completely new to the stoner duo, I think you'll have a blast playing this game regardless. Its mix of humor, engaging combat, and nostalgic references make it appealing to just about anyone. With a 2024 release planned, this is definitely a game you should keep on your radar—especially for all you couch potatoes out there (you know what I mean, wink wink). Trust me, it’s shaping up to be the perfect game for kicking back and enjoying some good, old-fashioned beat-em-up action.
