Nintendo Confirms That Switch Online Will Succeed The Virtual Console
About a month ago, Nintendo officially confirmed that the highly-anticipated Virtual Console, will not be coming to the Switch after all. This announcement caused confusion among players because the company stated that the online service for the Nintendo Switch will offer NES games, which is practically the same concept. Moreover, players are also concerned with the availability of games from other consoles such as the GameCube and if Nintendo is planning to offer those on the online service as well.
Speaking with IGN at E3 last week, Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime provided clarity to the player’s questions about the Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch online.
“The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right?” Fils-Aime said. “With the mentality that says we’re going to be offering a slate of games, and it’s a slate that’s going to increase over time. For many of these games, there’s going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That’s the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch.”
Fils-Aime’s statement doesn’t directly answer whether the online service will also provide titles from SNES, N64, or even the GameCube. However, he gave us a hint that more legacy games will be coming soon, and he did not limit these to the NES, so maybe we can expect titles from multiple systems after all.
