PlayStation 5 Update: Releases In Q4 2020 With New Controllers
Sony has confirmed that the next-generation console will be called the PlayStation 5. It will also release in the fourth quarter of 2020, which means it will be available for the holiday season. While not surprising revelations, hearing this from Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is reassuring and the official release of information fuels excitement for the next stage of Sony hardware.
The other major announcement regarding the PlayStation 5 involved the controllers that will accompany the next console. Two new features will help to immerse players into games more so than ever before. Replacing rumble technology is haptic feedback. Depending on what’s happening in a game, the responses in the controller will feel different. Racing a car, shooting a gun, running across open terrain. All of these actions will have different haptic responses.
Working with haptic feedback are adaptive triggers on the L2 and R2 buttons. Developers will be able to program the resistance of these trigger buttons. Simulating the taut drawstring of a bow or the turbulent suspension of off-road driving can be done with the adaptive triggers. These two elements together will create a much more convincing immersive experience in PlayStation games.
