WAKING Looks To Be An Emotional Journey Unlike Any Other

tinyBuild is at it again with a new game that aims to shake up the action/adventure formula. Waking (released June 18th), a game that has been in the making for the past 5 years, is the brainchild of Jason Oda. Oda is a one man development team, who has been doing games for quite a while. He’s most known for his game Skrillex Quest, which is a Zelda-like dungeon crawler. Following a near-death experience which changed the way he thinks about life, Oda decided to do games that require more self-reflection and have deeper meaning. His first game following that realization was Continue?9876543210, which has you play as a dead video game character coming to terms with being deleted forever.

Waking, follows that idea of deeper meaning and self-reflection as well. It’s an action/adventure style game that places you in the situation of being in a coma. With gameplay and story elements, in combination with real world meditation, the developer wants the player to really feel the impact of the story they’re telling. Throughout the game, you’ll be asked to meditate and recall memories of parts from your life. These memories of places, loved ones, and emotions, will be used as your weapons to fight your way through those who want you to stay asleep. The really cool thing about this is that everyone will have a truly unique experience when it comes to playing the game. The game is available to play on Xbox One and PC right now.

I’m very excited to play this, as tinyBuild has a good track with me personally. I love the Hello Neighbor series as well as the mindlessly fun, Clustertruck. Hopefully this game too, can be a great addition to their growing library of IPs. I will be playing this game over the weekend, and hope to have a review out by the middle of this coming week.

The game has been out for a few weeks now, have any of you had a chance to play? What are your thoughts on the execution of the game? Did it resonate with you at all? Hit me up on Twitter, and let’s talk about it!
