We Now Know Which PS4 Accessories Are Going To Work On PS5
As we get closer to the launch of the PS5 Sony has finally begun to lift the veil on some of the system’s features, more specifically which PS4 accessories will work on the PS5. While Microsoft has been open in advertising that nearly every Xbox One accessory available would move up to the Series X, we haven’t had any understanding of what Sony’s plans regarding old accessories were. Well, the news is mostly good with a side of unfortunate.
On the good side, it seems that pretty much every PS4 accessory is going to be compatible with the PS5 in specific capacities. DualShock 4 controllers and third-party alternatives are going to be compatible with the PS5 but only for backwards compatible PS4 titles. Unfortunately, this means that DualShock 4’s won’t work for playing PS5 titles as Sony wants developers to be utilizing the new features found in the DualSense controller. Specialty controllers, like flight sticks and racing wheels, fair better and can be used for both PS4 and PS5 titles. Headsets also make the cut with USB and 3.5 mm options being supported on the new system. Likewise, PSVR and PS Move controllers will also be fully supported on PSVR titles compatible with PS5. An adapter will need to be used for the PlayStation Camera but it looks like Sony will be offering those for free to PSVR owners!
Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
PlayStation Camera will work for Supported PlayStation VR titles through the use of an adapter. Adapter to be provided to PSVR users for free, more details to come.
Overall compatibility is pretty strong for the accessories you may already own. The inability to use your existing controllers on PS5 titles is unfortunate but it makes sense considering the new haptic feedback being implemented into the DualSense. Sony ensuring specialty controller support though is a big win for simulation and fighting game fans though as investing in yet another stick is never fun.
