Artist François Baranger has returned to the world of H.P. Lovecraft with the arrival of the At the Mountains of Madness illustrated novella. Free League Publishing and Design Studio Press have partnered with the French artist to bring this first volume in this Lovecraftian horror story.
At the Mountains of Madness is one of Lovecraft’s best-known works, and it’s a horror classic that has inspired storytellers ever since its publication. Baranger has been interested in illustrated editions of H.P. Lovecraft’s work for some time and he acted upon it in 2017 with the release of The Call of Cthulhu. This is his second foray into the world of horror and the French illustrator has envisioned a terror-filled world in these colorful pages.
Vol. 1 is a hardcore book designed in a massive 262 x 350 mm folio format, so readers will be able to enjoy an immersive experience when looking through those full-spread images.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, here’s the setting:
Antarctica. A place of frozen wastes, desolation, and things best left forgotten. Explore the tale of William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University, and the leader of an ill-fated expedition to that remote and forlorn continent. Recorded in a series of letters, Dyers tells a scarcely believable tale full of anomalous and often horrific events. The expedition ventures further than any other before them, and ultimately pays the price for it.
At the Mountains of Madness is available for pre-order now and it launches on November 24th.
