Supergiant Games has been glowing in the wake of its critically acclaimed title, Hades since it reached 1.0 status two years ago. But the California-based developer hasn’t just been resting on their laurels. Instead, they’ve been hard at work on Hades 2, a full sequel to their last game and the first follow-up the studio has ever produced.
While the original Hades followed the exploits of Zagreus, Hades’ estranged son, Hades 2 will chronicle the adventures of Melinoe, another of the Greek gods’ lesser-known offspring. The reveal trailer for the game dropped last night as part of The Game Awards, showcasing some of the game’s combat, characters, and story elements.
Melinoe appears to be working with Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft, to defeat Chronos and rescue Hades from imprisonment. Along the way, she’ll collect boons from the other gods of Olympus and meet a colorful cast of characters, though it’s not clear how many familiar faces will return from the first game.
Supergiant Games will be releasing Hades 2 in early access next year. The first game originally launched in early access in 2018 before getting a full release in 2020. The fact that Supergiant is utilizing this method of development again implies that they liked the process of making a game with regular player feedback.
Hades 2 will launch in Early Access in 2023 for Steam and the Epic Games Store.
