Well, we are one step closer to getting that LEGO Mario game we have always dreamed of! Well, I am sure some people have dreamed of it at least. Anyways, today Nintendo and LEGO have unveiled a new series of LEGO sets based on the Mustached Plumber. The sets are unlike any LEGO sets I have personally seen before as it looks more like a board game the way things are made. The Mario LEGO figure features a number of screens to display animations and even gives Mario some great expressions. Coins, Flags, and time can appear on Mario’s chest and there are plenty of sound effects to go around. Seriously it is interesting stuff, check it out in the video above.

We are very excited to bring Mario into the physical world through interactive and social LEGO play. With this experience we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favourite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, LEGO Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids.
— Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer, EVP of the LEGO Group
I have always liked LEGO products and how they help children use their imagination to play. The new product we created together with the LEGO Group seeks to combine two different styles of play – one where you freely build the world of Mario and the other where you play with Mario in the very world that you have created.
— Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd

This feels like a very Nintendo approach to an established product and a venture I am sure will do well for both companies. The interactivity is the aspect I find most fascinating as it will let owners of the sets really make their own experiences. Depending on the cost of the sets I might have to pick up a few and use them with my kids!
