MVG Shares A Look Back At Resident Evil 2 On N64

Resident Evil 2 still stands tall as one of the best games in the entire Resident Evil franchise. After releasing on the PS1 in 1998, the game would go on to be ported to several consoles and even PC culminating last year with the highly successful remake. One of these ports was to the Nintendo 64 and the game being compressed down from 2 CD’s to 64 megabyte cartridge was nothing short of amazing. The entire game made it onto Nintendo’s system with videos, and voice work making the transition. there were even a few bonus features thrown in like changing the blood color and violence levels. One of the more fascinating additions was the support for surround sound not found in the original PS1 version of the game.

If you have ever been curious as to how Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego) were able to pull off this port, Modern Vintage Gamer has a new video to show you exactly that! The most obvious answer is of course compression on both audio and video assets but this isn’t enough to get the game down to the required size. Through custom coding and techniques the team was able to shrink everything down to the size needed without sacrificing the overall quality of the game, truly fascinating stuff! There is more to it than that so go check out the video and let us know what you think about RE2 on N64.
