Treasures Sorely Missed
In an age of ever-increasing digital releases, DLC, and items that only show up on our screens and rarely in our hands, having something we can see, touch, and feel is becoming increasingly rare. I remember fondly the days of going to a local Kay-Bee Toy Store or K-Mart to pick up the latest game releases. I would study the box completely, especially the screenshots of the back of the box. I loved opening the manual with that unique smell and studying the stories, controls, and background of the game I was about to dive into. That has become so rare and overall, even most physical collector’s edition versions of games have become full of big prices with cheap knockoffs and low-quality materials.
We usually receive digital review codes for the games or content we cover. Very rarely, we will get a physical retail version of the games. So, when I recently received a package directly from Poland, I had no idea how special those contents would truly be…
All In!
For the upcoming release of Chernobylite, the folks at All In! Games were extremely generous in sending us their special media pack. When I started to unpack the contents of an extremely high-quality ammo box and pouch, I was blown away by the care, detail, and love that went into this package. The more contents I unpacked from the crate, the more I became blown away by the quality, detail, and sheer amount of stuff crammed in there! Gas mask with attaching hose, old photos, posters, t-shirt, a sweet looking green crystal, glow stick, stickers, a sew-on patch, art back, doll, and game key (oh my!) were all included in this stellar kit.
Honestly, I am a bit speechless about the whole thing. Everything includes screams quality, care, and something lost in most modern games: SOUL. What may seem trite to some, I was reminded how much I missed QUALITY, physical gaming packages that I could actually be proud of. This one stands near the top and a trend that I hope other publishers latch onto.
As for the game itself, the Early Access build is already impressive as well as a mix of FPS, crafting, exploration, and a creepy AF story that gets under your skin right from the opening scene. Color me intrigued! Chernobylite is available now in Early Access on Steam and the full game launches along with our full review on July 28.
