BIOSHOCK Is The Next Video Game Franchise Coming To Netflix

Video game movie adaptations don’t have much of a good track record at the box office. Many of these titles have dealt with mixed reactions from the fanbase with the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Doom, and Resident Evil movies. However, we are still waiting for the day that a video game movie will be made that can live up to its small-screen origins. Well, that day might come sooner than we think since Deadline just reported that Netflix is partnering with 2K to make a BioShock movie!

Netflix has reportedly been working on a deal with Take-Two Interactive for about a year to acquire the screen rights to the popular video game franchise. There are talks that the studio heads may even want to create multiple BioShock projects.

As a huge BioShock fan myself, this news is bittersweet. BioShock has an immersive and captivating story solely told through the eyes of Jack, the first game’s protagonist. This allowed certain story elements to be revealed in such a way to the player that I believe would be tough to replicate in film. Not only that, but I believe live-action video game adaptations should be best suited as a series rather than films. Especially games like BioShock where the narrative plays out over the course of multiple hours.

It is not certain at this time which BioShock game will be adapted into a film. It could be based on the underwater city of Rapture or possibly the city in the skies, Columbia. It is also possible that Netflix may be working closely with 2K on a brand new story for the BioShock franchise. With the theme of choice and multiple realities etched into the games, a brand new story is certainly not out of the cards.

2K also took to Twitter to remind everyone that Cloud Chamber Studios is currently helming the new BioShock project and actively looking for recruits. BioShock: The Collection is currently available at a discounted price of $11.99 on Steam.

So what do you think of this new Netflix deal? Are you excited to see a BioShock film, or would you rather have a multi-episode series? Let us know in the comments!
