Dark Souls Makes Its Debut On The Switch

After the release of the third installment of the Dark Souls series, many fans were left wondering where the direction of the franchise was headed. The widely accepted idea is that if there ARE any new coming games, they will be a completely different story line, considering the third installment as the conclusion in that trilogy. But fans are now rejoicing across the world (for the most part).

Queue in Nintendo, who dropped a bomb this morning with their teaser trailer, announcing Dark Souls Remastered for the Nintendo Switch.

Yes, you read that right. Dark Souls is coming to the Switch. Now I’ll be honest. My first initial reaction was a “YAY!!!!” followed by an immediate sense of confusion. Don’t get me wrong, what Nintendo does, they do well. It’s why they are such a rock solid company and a founding father in video game history. But when I think Nintendo, I think bright colors, cartoony characters, and more of a family, kid friendly style that can easily be appreciated with warm smiles and fond feelings. Not the dark themed, rage inducing, haunt-you-in-your-dreams type of game that Dark Souls is.

I’m well aware that there have been other, more adult titles released for the Switch that they have done perfectly well with. Such as DOOM, for example. But you’re talking about messing with the love of a diehard community for a game that was released nearly a decade ago and still has a very large pool of active players. Who, by this time, know the game inside out while blindfolded (not even exaggerating on the blindfolded part). So you better believe that there are going to be a lot of reservations and expectations to be met.

With the tiny scrap that Nintendo left us (a 40 second trailer of a bonfire being lit) we can really only speculate at this point. But seeing how FROM Software is still involved in the process, I’m choosing to have faith that the remastered version will be worthy of the original that I fell madly in love with. Ideally, expanding and perfecting its predecessor.

Overall, I’m excited to see how it plays out on the Switch. I never thought I’d be so eager to see the words YOU DIED again. Although if that’s not your console of choice, no need to fret. It is also going to be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Luckily though, we won’t have to wait very long. Dark Souls Remastered is set to be released on May 25, 2018.
