Philippines-based indie studio Ranida Games has released a new update for their history inspired 2D fighting game BAYANI. This latest update adds the new character Lolang Tsora who is based on real-life Filipina revolutionary Melchora Aquino. Tsora is an older character in the game which means she has lower HP than most others but don’t think that makes her a pushover. With an assortment of light and dark magic at her disposal opponents won’t know what hit them until it is too late! With this new character release, the core roster for BAYANI has been completed and the team will now move onto improving other aspects of the game including netcode and game modes.

The complete character roster includes:

  • Joe (based on Jose Rizal)

  • Dre (based on Andres Bonifacio)

  • Oria (based on Gregoria de Jesús)

  • Tonio (based on Antonio Luna)

  • Leon (based on Emilio Aguinaldo)

  • Rio (based on Apolinario Mabini)

  • Fernando (based on Ferdinand Magellan)

  • Lolang Tsora (based on Melchora Aquino)

With the release of our eighth character, our core roster is now officially complete. The ninth secret character will be released as free DLC (downloadable content) to everyone in the future. It was added as a mini-quest social goal in our Kickstarter campaign so having it as a DLC seems more fitting. We can now start development for other features of the game, such as Story Mode, an updated Arcade Mode and a more robust training room. This also means that we can divert more resources to online multiplayer, with a proper lobby. At this point, rollback netcode is a must so we will have to rethink our multiplayer approach. DLC characters will also still be developed alongside the other features but character creation will no longer be the top priority.

I am digging Ranida’s approach to game making incorporating their countries heritage into interesting gameplay. BAYANI’s entire roster is based on historical figures and folklore which will let the team weave an interesting narrative. Fans of 2D fighting games should also appreciate the core gameplay but it isn’t difficult for less skilled players to also jump into. BAYANI is available now through Steam Early Access for $15.99. If you pick up the game today (8/30) you can get a special 33% discount on the game. If you would like to try Bayani out before you buy into it, there is a free demo available here!
