The Witch Saga for Tribes of Midgard is here and it is the biggest update Norsfell and Gearbox Publishing have brought to the game! Of course, it will have all of the standard upgrades, such as a new Saga boss that will exist along with the other three, making a total of four Saga bosses available to defeat in each Saga run, a new season pass, and quality-of-life updates. However, they have revamped the Survival side of the game and best of all, they have added Cross Play to the game - although it is a bit limited still.
First, let’s talk about the new Saga boss - Hel. In order to reach her, you will have to descend into the Realm of the Dead to fight her. She has summoned the Draugr to lead her army of Helthings as she schemes to corrupt the roots of Yggdrasil. With Baldr held captive, you must free him and take on Hel in order to stop her! Beware, her realm is a permanent night full of Helthings and other dangers, so prepare to fight against the cold and the creatures within (aka use fire weapons).
Now, for those of you who enjoy the Survival side of this game, let’s start with the bad news - your current worlds will be wiped. This update will unfortunately be clearing all current Survival servers as they have added on to it and improved it. At least they added the option to begin a Survival map with starter kit, just as you could use for Saga mode. As for what’s new, here’s a quick list:
Farming is Here! You now have the ability to plant seeds and cultivate materials needed for crafting. Using the new Shovel tool, players can plant a special material called ‘Essences’ and grow ingredients like stone and iron after a timer. You can plant regular plant ‘Essence’ as well.
Ancients will now respawn in Survival mode, giving you a chance to take them on again and collect rewards.
A special mini-game related to Farming is here nicknamed ‘Sapling Defense’ - You may find a shrub sized version of the Tree of Life (one per biome). If you plant Essence around it, the Essence will grow faster but it will end up attacked by a horde and if you can defend the sapling then you will get more return from the Essence. It is suggested to make a Garrison to help you defend the sapling in this make-shift tower defense mini-game.
To clarify on the new Cross Play addition, players on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox can now connect and fight together. They hope to include PlayStation and Nintendo Switch in the future as well. However, they also added an online game search in the menu to make it easier to find games with other players.
Tribes of Midgard is available on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
