It should tell you something about a game when it releases on Steam and less than a month later it boasts an Overwhelmingly Positive score with over 26,000 ratings. Again, Phasmophobia only came out last month on September 18th.
The multiplayer cooperative horror from Kinetic Games is in Early Access, but the level of player interest and streaming popularity is massive, just like the other tense and interaction-heavy indie game Among Us.
This was no sleeper hit though that’s been around for two years before players discovered it. Phasmophobia is flying out of the gates like an angry ghost ready to scare the pants off anyone who is stupid enough to go into haunted places.
Except… it seems like everyone is stupid enough to go into those places and there doing it in groups.
Phasmophobia is a four-player online co-op psychological horror where you and your team members of paranormal investigators will enter haunted locations filled with paranormal activity and gather as much evidence of the paranormal as you can. You will use your ghost hunting equipment to search for and record evidence of whatever ghost is haunting the location to sell onto a ghost removal team.
You can choose to support your team by monitoring the location with CCTV cameras and motion sensors from the safety of the truck or head inside and get your hands dirty with the ghostly activity that will get increasingly hostile as time goes on.
It’s currently in the top ten games on Steam for active player count, and it’s also in the top ten streaming games on Twitch.
Big YouTube gamers are in on the fun, too. Markiplier and Jacksepticeye both shared their cooperative experience with the horror adventure, and they’ve already racked up millions of views in the last week.
I’m curious to see if the developer can maintain the momentum.
