Blizzard Entertainment announced last night that Destiny 2 will be sold and played on PC through their online platform, Battle.Net. For those of you living under the proverbial rock, you may think "Hey, that's cool!". For those of us who have never seen a non-Blizzard game being accommodated on their platform, we proclaim our favorite three-word knee-jerk reaction. And it's not I love you, but rather What the fudge?
Bookmark the date: yesterday is the first day in history that Blizzard have ever done this since the launch of Battle.Net in 1996. We've been given Diablo, Warcraft, etc, but never a non-Blizzard game. Does this mean something new for Battle.Net? Will we start seeing other games on their platform? Let's have a look at the announcement on their blog for some answers:
Bungie’s upcoming first-person action game Destiny 2 will be joining the party! We’re excited to announce that we're partnering with Bungie and Activision to support the PC version of Destiny 2 exclusively via Battle.net.
We’re big fans of Destiny here at Blizzard, and we’re honored to be able to help the talented folks at Bungie and Activision bring their much-anticipated sequel to a new platform. Our focus in terms of supporting non-Blizzard games is solely around Destiny 2. Aside from potentially evaluating needs or opportunities for future Activision games, we don’t have any short- or long-term plans to support third-party games with Battle.net.
I guess not. The fact is that Destiny 2 will be enjoying all of the great features Battle.Net has to offer, but I can already see loads of Blizzard supporters crying for further cross-over platform support in the future. They revealed that the opportunity is there, and that they can make it possible, we just need to make sure Blizzard loves the game we want on Battle.Net as much as we do.
