The Rio Olympics just ended with a geektastic bang! For those of you that missed it, at the closing ceremony it is customary to have the next hosting nation present a preview of what we can expect, and Japan being Japan showcased for Tokyo 2020 not only locations, folklore, and sports, but also anime and gaming culture.
The whole place was beyond ecstatic when Super Mario himself made a surprise appearance on the video screens alongside other internationally beloved Japanese characters, and the crowd went completely apeshit when Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, emerged from a warp pipe in the center of the arena donning Mario’s hat with Tokyo written on it.
Understandably, this has left netizens worldwide in awe and excited to see what crazy and amazing things Japan has in store for us, after all, they are already planning an artificial meteor shower for the opening ceremony, so who knows what else they're cooking up over there. What does seems certain is that Nintendo is going to be a big part of it.
