If you've been playing Mortal Kombat 1 like me, you've probably already finished the Story mode and moved on to the Invasions mode. If you haven't completed Johnny Cage's Mansion tutorial, I suggest finishing that before continuing here. Just a heads up, the following contains a complete walkthrough of the invasion mode, so be aware of spoilers. However, I won't be revealing any story details.
Before we start, I want to mention that finishing the Invasions mode requires a lot of dedication. While it does provide seasonal koins for shopping in the seasonal section, the rewards at the end can also be obtained by reaching the Warrior Rank in Kombat League with Scorpion. So, if you're not a fan of fighting the computer repeatedly, you can always grind out the Kombat League instead. Personally, I find invasions to be perfect as it offers a mini-story mode with plenty of fights.
Quick Tips
Congratulations on making it through Johnny Cage's Mansion! Now, it's time for Scorpion's Invasion Story. It can be a bit sad, but don't worry. After completing Fengjian Village on the Mesa Select, you'll unlock the next levels: Sun Do Festival (top of the screen), Wu Shi Academy (top right), and the Gateway Portal (dead center).
I suggest that once you have enough money and finish the Sun Do Festival, visit the Kollector's shop at the Wu Shi Academy. He has some consumables that can help you level up.
Another tip is to familiarize yourself with relics and talisman, as you'll need them later on. Also, take some time to understand the elemental damage chart. As you progress, enemy levels will increase, making the game more challenging. Having the right elemental advantage can make a big difference. So try to play with at least one character of each type. It's a cool mechanic because it allows you to experience different characters instead of just sticking to one, like me with Reptile.
Oh, and don't forget to always buy ornate keys from the Kollector. You never know when you'll need one.
Fenjian Village
Fengjian Village is quite straightforward, similar to the Mansion. There's only one path to follow, and it serves as an introduction to the upcoming gameplay. However, you'll soon come across your first obstacle - debris blocking your way. One encounter, called "Damn Sand," has a clue above it. Encounters with clues usually require a special action to open the debris, often leading to a special chest or something similar. In this case, the clue for "Damn Sand" is an anagram for "Destroy the World." To open the debris, you'll need to perform the Cyrax Kameo Fatality. Next, you'll encounter a gate that requires the Netherstone to unlock. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until you complete the entire season to obtain the Netherstone. As it is obtained by defeating the Season 1 boss.
As you progress, you'll eventually face your first Boss Fight. These spaces are marked with a warrior mask instead of a fist. Boss fights are generally tougher, consisting of multiple rounds and survival rounds. The first boss you'll encounter is Kung Lao, who is a magic type. Using a blood or chaos type character will deal extra damage if needed. Havik or Reiko are good choices for this fight.
Once you defeat the boss, you can continue until you reach a locked gate. If you've explored all the spots, you should already have the key. However, if you don't, there's a specific tower called "Dark Days" that you need to complete. To obtain the key, you'll have to finish the entire tower, including passing the Test Your Might challenge.
After unlocking the gate, you'll face the final boss of this level, Kitana. Like Kung Lao, she is also a magic type. The same rules apply here, so using a blood or chaos type character will be effective against her.
Sun Do Festival
Welcome to the Sun Do Festival, where the real excitement of the game begins. Prepare yourself for some grinding! In this level, you might get lost at least once, but most roads eventually lead to the same destination.
Throughout this level, I highly recommend using a fire elemental fighter. You'll encounter a lot of Ice and Blood type characters, and using fire will allow you to deal more damage to Ice types and take less damage from Blood types.
Before reaching the space with another Nether Stone gate (which requires completing S1), you'll encounter your first clue-based encounter called "Pure Chaos." The clue for this encounter is "TOASTY!!!" It may be obvious to me, but you might assume it has something to do with Scorpion, and you'd be right. Specifically, performing a Kameo Fatality with Klassic Scorpion will open the debris in this encounter.
When you encounter "Meat & Bones," you have the option to either go straight to a tower or take the left path. It is recommended to go to the tower in this case. The tower encounter is called "Never Ends" and it will serve as the Gate Key tower for later. Similar to the previous level, you will need to complete the entire tower, including the Test Your Might challenge, in order to obtain the key.
By this point, you should have accumulated enough koins to visit the Kollector in the Wu Shi Academy. It is recommended to purchase at least one of the consumables available, as it will help with the increasing difficulty. The towers are now starting to be at a higher level than you, so having some extra assistance from consumables can be beneficial.
After progressing further, you'll encounter the mid-boss of this level, Smoke. Smoke is a dark and normal type character. If you want to make the fight a bit easier, you can switch to a Magic and Poison damage combo.
Once you defeat Smoke, you'll reach a locked gate. By this point, you should have obtained the key from the tower earlier. A few spaces after the gate, you'll notice another chest hidden behind some debris. The encounter is called "Broken" and it has a peculiar clue that says "AMNISLTA4." The clue is an anagram saying “Talisman4,” so to clear the debris and access the chest, you'll need an talisman with at least four charges. During the battle, you'll have to use your talisman four times.
Finally, after clearing the debris, you'll face the boss of this level, Sub-Zero. If you're not at an appropriate level, this can be a tough fight. I recommend focusing heavily on using fire attacks, possibly with a Scorpion and Sektor combo, to increase your chances of success.
Tarkatan Colony
At this point, as you continue through the Tarkatan Colony, the levels will start to balance out again and the fights may become more difficult. To stay ahead of the curve, it's a good idea to make your way back to the Wu Shi Academy and purchase another level-up item.
Following the map straight, you can reach all the necessary encounters. On the far left of the map, there is an encounter called "Infected" with the clue "DEDAERHT." The clue is the word “Threaded” backwards, you can clear the debris in this location by performing an Ashrah Fatality. The other clue encounter is located almost in the center of the map. The first tower you come across in either direction will lead you to this encounter called "Screech," with the clue "Flipping Out." To clear this encounter, you need to switch stances using LT/L2 15-20 times during the match.
Since these are the only two special spots on the map, you can proceed until you reach the Gate Key tower. This tower, called "Long Road," is unavoidable as you progress. Complete the tower and pass the Test Your Might challenge to gain the full tower rewards including the key.
The boss fights on this map are Kung Lao and Kitana, both of which are magic type elements. To make these fights easier, it is recommended to use Havik, who is of blood and chaos types, both of which deal bonus damage to magic types.
Shang Tsung’s Laboratory
Shang Tsung's Lab is a slightly shorter level compared to the others, but it has more ambush encounters. The level is mostly a straight line with two connecting squares.
There are two clue encounters for the secret chests in this level, but one of them is locked behind the Nether Stone Gate. If you go left from the portal, at the first fork, take the right path to find an encounter called "Frisky" with the clue "Another Test Subject." Simply complete the fight and perform a fatality with Shang Tsung to access the chest. If you already have the Nether Stone, you'll find an encounter with the clue "Brutal Ways" in the same location. End the match with any Brutality to remove the debris and access the chest.
Unlike the previous levels, there are no towers to complete in Shang Tsung's Lab. However, you will receive a key from the sub-boss, General Shao, when you defeat them. The boss at the end of this level is Havik, who has different weaknesses compared to General Shao. Be prepared for a challenging fight with these two very different fighters.
Living Forest
In the living forest, there is a straight line going down the center from start to finish. The clue encounters are located on the sides, and there is a locked gate in the center that brings us back to the towers.
For the first clue encounter, take the first right path. The encounter has a clue that says "QUACKX10." In this match, you simply need to duck 10 times to clear the encounter. Next, return to the center and continue on. Take the second left path. Follow this path until you come across an encounter with the clue "Nomed Renni," which is "Inner Demon" spelled backwards. To clear the debris in this location, you will need to perform a Kameo Fatality with Sareena. Unlike other levels, the living forest has three clue encounters. To find the third one, go back to the center and continue straight until you find the next left path. After taking that left, you will encounter the clue "ERTECA AOSCH," which unscrambles to say "Create Chaos." Perform a fatality with Havik to finish this match and clear the encounter.
Before reaching the last chest location, you will need to unlock the gate. To do so, find and complete the tower called "Moving On Up." This tower can be found by taking the left path before reaching the gate. After completing the tower, continue down the middle path to progress further.
Fire Temple
Congratulations on making it this far! You're almost done with the game. In this level, there are three boss fights, including the final boss, two clue encounters, and three towers. One of these towers will provide you with the key to unlock the gate leading to the final fight.
The first clue encounter can be found to the right of the first forge. The clue states "KCIRT TAH," which spells out "Hat Trick" when reversed. This clue refers to Kung Lao, who uses his hat as a weapon. To complete this encounter, perform a Kameo Fatality with Kung Lao during the match. The second clue encounter is located directly to the left of the first sub-boss, just before the gate. The clue states "Use the element that brings life," which refers to water. Change your character to Rain and finish the match with a fatality to complete this encounter.
Opposite to the clue encounter, you will find the Gate Key tower. The tower is titled "Dying Light," and completing it will provide you with the key to unlock the gate. This will be your last tower of the season if you have completed all the towers along the way. The final boss in this level is Scorpion. Come prepared with ice type fighters or make sure your characters are leveled up to the maximum of 20, as Scorpion is a formidable opponent.
After defeating Scorpion, congratulations! You will unlock some cool-looking skins and obtain the Nether Stone. You can use the Nether Stone to revisit the maps and unlock areas you haven't been able to explore yet. Be aware that the encounters beyond the gate are more difficult, but if you've made it this far, you shouldn't have a problem.
I hope this helped! Kome back for season 2!
