On PC, modding has been an ever present way to breath new life or fix things in any game. On consoles the act of modding is widely unavailable or requires the use of expensive hardware or emulation on PC. There are certain notable examples of modding on consoles with Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 supporting user made mods. Both Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 also support mods on Xbox One and PS4 although somewhat limited.
Today however modding on consoles has scored a huge win with a new partnership between Paradox Interactive and Microsoft. The partnership will allow mods to be created for PC and Xbox One using a new Paradox mod toolbox. With a single upload the mods be available on both Xbox One and PC for download on the main menu of Paradox Interactive titles.
The feature is currently only available for Surviving Mars but should be rolling out to other Paradox games over time. If the whole process turns out to be a success maybe we will start to see modding on consoles become more of a normal thing. As a side note, the newest patch to add mod support has also brought mouse and keyboard support to the Xbox One version of Surviving Mars.
