DESTINY 2: THE FINAL SHAPE Brings Fan-Favorite Character Back From The Dead

Destiny 2 fans have spent the last five years mourning the loss of one of the game’s principal NPCs, but all that’s about to change. Bungie showed up to this week’s PlayStation Showcase to reveal the first look at Destiny 2: The Final Shape, next year’s big expansion for the online shooter. This teaser included one of the biggest twists in the game’s history: Cayde-6, the long-dead Vanguard of the Hunter class, is alive.

The teaser shows Ikora Rey, the Warlock Vanguard, sitting around a campfire and recalling the major events of the past several years of Destiny 2’s story. The camera then pans up to reveal that she’s talking to Cayde, who tells her he missed her before gazing out over a strange landscape under a large, triangular portal. Fans of the game will recognize this portal from the recent Lightfall campaign, which suggests that Ikora and Cayde are somewhere on the other side of it.

Cayde was last seen in the Forsaken expansion that kicked off Destiny 2’s second year and totally revamped the game’s progression systems and core gameplay features. Cayde was brutally murdered in the opening mission of that campaign, a plot point that has had far-reaching consequences for multiple characters over the intervening years.

Castle and The Rookie actor Nathan Fillion will return to play Cayde-6 for The Final Shape expansion. Fillion last played the character in the base storyline for Destiny 2 as he was unable to reprise the character in Forsaken due to scheduling conflicts. Nolan North, the voice of the player character’s Ghost companion, took over the role for that introductory mission.

The teaser also revealed that Bungie will host another Destiny Showcase on August 22nd of this year to reveal more information on The Final Shape and where Destiny 2 will go after this expansion. The Final Shape is set to conclude the decade-long saga that has defined the franchise since it began, so the future of the series is still a mystery.

But Destiny 2 wasn’t the only thing Bungie had to show off during this PlayStation Showcase. They also revealed their second, mystery title, which is a return to the Marathon franchise they created almost 30 years ago. There was also some major news from other, third-party studios, including new gameplay for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and the reveal of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
