Did It Just Get A Little Colder Outside Cuz Microsoft And Sony Are Joining Forces!

Yes you read that title correctly, Sony and Microsoft are joining forces in the realm of cloud computing and entertainment! The plan is to share information and infrastructure to further build Microsoft’s Azure into a streaming and processing powerhouse. The deal also states that Sony will begin to use Azure in its own cloud based services as well as develop tools to help other creators. Don’t be surprised that if in a couple of years Sony starts including power of the cloud taglines in announcements!

PlayStation itself came about through the integration of creativity and technology. Our mission is to seamlessly evolve this platform as one that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere. For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content.
— Kenichiro Yoshida Sony president
Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation. Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.
— Satya Nadella Microsoft CEO

Needless to say this partnership came out of left field but really goes to show how impressive Azure is. One also has to wonder if the announcement of this partnership has anything to do with Google’s Stadia service. The partnership is in its infancy currently so we won’t see anything on it for a while but the possibilities are exciting! Hmm, I wonder if PlayStation now will also transfer over to Azure?
