Let's Talk About It - SEA OF THIEVES: A PIRATE'S LIFE

The new A Pirate’s Life content for Sea of Thieves has been out for a few days now and I have some strong thoughts on it. I and some of my colleagues here at GameTyrant have been absolutely addicted to its new Tall Tales, due mostly to the fact that they so perfectly represent both the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and films. The majority of my feelings towards this content of course is extremely positive but there are some issues due to bugs here and there that are worth a mention.

Firstly, I’d like to talk about the purchasable Pirate’s items in the shop. There are some really awesome things such as the costumes, a ship set, a pet, emotes, and weapons. As for cosmetics, you can get outfits inspired by Jack, Gibbs, Cotton, and Anamaria. A huge purchasable item is the complete ship set. You basically get to make your ship look like the Black Pearl and it’s a beautiful sight to behold.

Other notable items are the famous dog with keys pet, Jack Sparrow emotes, and weapons set. I feel that the weakest aspects of purchasable content are easily the weapons as they don’t look like they were ripped right from the films as much as everything else does. The cool thing about them though is that they are unique looking as opposed to some others in the game and some of them even have Jack’s sparrow tattoo on them.

The thing that this content update does best is just how much the developers add from both the ride and the films to make this one of the most immersive and jaw-dropping experiences that I’ve ever had while playing a game. As someone who grew up as the films came out and has been to Walt Disney World more times than I can even count, this is an extremely special thing for me to get to experience.

This is the next best thing to actually schlepping to the park and getting on the ride. It actually does a fantastic job at giving a greater connection between the ride and movies as well. It ties in ideas that make Jack’s appearance in the ride that much more relevant to the stories the films tell as opposed to him just being there for the sake of it.

There are also the nuances and tie-ins to Sea of Thieves in its own right. It’s kind of crazy to think that every time I go on the ride from now on, I’m going to be remembering the game. Jumping off of that; the game gorgeously recreates scenes from the ride and even gives a different take on some of them entirely.

The level structure is pretty good. So far, I’ve played 3 of the 5 Tall Tales available and found the first and third the best so far. The reason being, these two really pick up the POTC vibes and run with them. The second is great and is where it really intertwines the SoT lore with Jack and Co. The thing I wasn’t too keen on was that the level is really repetitive throughout and there are or were some major bugs. The devs are actively working to iron these out though.

The bugs were the main issue and came about towards the last third of the Tale. Basically, there’s a couple of segments where you need to use canons to take out enemies and then a boss. Unfortunately, there aren’t any cannonballs that load in the barrels nearby. What’s worse is the fact that there’s no food in the other barrels either. So while you’re trying to kill every enemy with a pistol, you have to continuously respawn because you can’t heal yourself.

All in all, A Pirate’s Life is a dream come true and I hope we get more content like this in future projects involving Disney. There are some really fun things in this game that I don’t want to spoil, otherwise, I’d be talking about it to even greater lengths. You gotta experience it for yourself. It’s given me chills and has brought tears to my eyes. It’s that glorious.

I hope you’ve taken something away from this. This is free content for all so go ahead and check it out for yourself. Especially if you’re someone like me, you may not be comfortable going back to the parks yet. This fills that void a bit and brings Disney into your house.

Sorry for not having this up yesterday. I’ve decided to move this segment to Fridays instead so be ready to see another one next week!
