Level-5’s DECAPOLICE Is A New, Investigative RPG

This week’s Nintendo Direct featured a host of exciting announcements, including one from Ni No Kuni developer Level-5. The Japanese studio pulled back the curtain on a brand-new IP coming to the Nintendo Switch this year: Decapolice.

This stylish, anime-inspired game puts players in the shoes of the latest recruits to the Broadstone Police Force’s Special Investigations Unit. To prepare for their new jobs as detectives, these cadets are placed inside a virtual training simulator that recreates their entire world in a digital space. This opens the door for unique, technological approaches to both mystery-solving and turn-based battles. There’s also a deeper conspiracy involving a sinister hacker working for a shady corporation.

Level-5 is renowned for its work in the RPG genre with such notable hits as Dragon Quest VIII, Rogue Galaxy, and the Ni No Kuni series under its belt. Decapolice looks to continue that lineage with robust battle mechanics and a striking art style. You’ll rely on allies during both investigation scenarios and in battle, and each character appears to have different strengths depending on the type of evidence. Their investigation abilities also seem to have levels attached, suggesting SIM elements as well.

Decapolice will launch on the Nintendo Switch in 2023. For more from the February Nintendo Direct, check out what’s coming next for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and what you can expect from the recently announced Splatoon 3 Expansion Pass.
