A new indie studio, Spitfire Interactive has recently sprung up from some of the key members of the team that created the Hand of Fate series. At Steam Next Fest, Spitfire and their publisher, Defiant Development, is planning to release the public demo for their new gritty, tactical superhero RPG, dubbed Capes.
The game will be about running across a city overrun by villains as a superhero team trying to protect the public and beat the bad guys. The trailer's gameplay and graphics seem to evoke memories of X-Com’s isometric tactical turn-based fighting in urban environments; except with superpowers instead of guns.
Another option available that will be familiar to X-Com players is the ability to create a team of diverse heroes with different, backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and hopes. All the effort to create your superhero team and then grow and build their powers is sure to be rewarding in regards to gameplay.
One thing the video game genre is severely lacking in is superhero games that aren’t already associated with an existing corporate IP, and all the restrictions that come with making a game based on that IP. I can’t wait to see what an indie studio can do with the superhero genre without some big corporation having the final say on every part of the game.
Capes is coming out in early 2023 on PC via Steam and will have a public demo available at the Steam Next Fest.
