The next installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake project, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will officially arrive in Winter 2023, according to Square Enix. This news comes from the Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration broadcast that happened earlier this week. The announcement came alongside a first-look trailer that teases even more changes to the classic game’s story.
The trailer features Cloud and Sephiroth walking side by side along a dirt path while several different characters speak in voice-over about three central themes: What will become of the planet? What is Sepiroth’s endgame? What is fact and what is fiction? It closes Cloud and Aerith wondering aloud about Zack’s whereabouts over footage of Zack carrying Cloud to the gates of Midgar.
Final Fantasy VII Remake launched exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in 2019 before coming to PlayStation 5 and Steam, and many fans were surprised to find that it not only expanded on the story of the original game but made large-scale changes that permanently altered the course of the narrative. These alterations will likely bear fruit in Rebirth as well as in the final, unnamed installment in the now-confirmed remake trilogy.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5 in Winter 2023. For more from the FFVII 25th Anniversary Celebration, check out Square Enix’s reveal of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion.
