It’s ALIVE! The MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls Open Beta is live right now through July 26, and after spending serious time with it on PC, all I can say is this game is absolutely stunning. Arc System Works has done it again. The studio behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ has poured its signature anime art style magic into the Marvel Universe and the result is a jaw dropping 4v4 tag team fighter that looks, sounds, and plays like butter. Several characters are available in the beta across six stages including a gorgeous nighttime Marvel's New York, and the full game launches August 6 with 20 fighters split across five teams: the Unbreakable X-Men, the Amazing Guardians, the Fighting Avengers, the Knights of Doom, and the Samurai Outriders.
The hook that sets Tokon apart from every tag fighter before it is brilliant. You start each match with only two characters and have to earn the rest of your squad mid fight through throws, Wall Breaks that send opponents crashing through multi-section stages, and round losses. It creates this incredible escalation where matches build from focused 1v1 footsies into full blown 4v4 chaos, and every unlock feels earned. The beta includes ranked and casual online matches with full cross play between PS5 and PC, local versus, a deep training mode, and even the first three chapters of the Amazing Guardians story mode told through beautifully illustrated motion comic sequences. For a beta, the amount of content here is staggering.
Now, full transparency: the autocombo system and simplified special inputs will likely ruffle feathers among hardcore fighting game purists who want more manual execution barriers. That's a fair critique. But for the vast majority of players, and especially for Marvel fans who've been dreaming of something like this since the Marvel vs. Capcom glory days, the accessibility is a feature, not a flaw but I am sure there will be some that disagree.
The easy chain combos let anyone pick up Spider-Man or Wolverine and immediately feel powerful, but there is genuine depth underneath for players willing to lab out team synergies, Assemble Gauge management, Vital Gauge anchor strategies, and the layered assist system. Arc System Works has always understood how to build fighters that are easy to enjoy and hard to master, and Tokon is no different. Phoenix Cyclops was just announced as the first DLC character, a Year 1 pass with four additional fighters and a new stage is already planned, and the competitive community is buzzing after its showing at EVO Japan 2026. The Open Beta is free on PS5, Steam, and Epic Games Store with no registration required. If you have even a passing love for Marvel or fighting games, download it right now. This is a dream come true, and it plays like one too.
