Roguelites are one of the biggest game genres. Countless hours retreading new areas in a world beloved by the fanbase. While there are a lot of games in the genre, there seems to be an emphasis on keeping things fresh. When The Light Dies is a game developed by Electric Monkeys and published by PQube set in a frozen wilderness.
Light and flames need to be maintained in the dark cold forest to provide protection against the darkness and its creatures. The less light there is, the more the insanity meter fills, resulting in more enemies with stronger abilities. Hordes of enemies will trample through in hopes of killing the player and will need to be held back with an abundant supply of weapons. This is also a survival game so managing hunger and malnutrition is just as important as slaying monsters. Scavenging the procedurally generated wilderness will provide food to eat and books that can calm the insanity meter.
The monsters aren’t the only ones capable of the supernatural. The souls of dead enemies can be absorbed and used to unlock skill tree abilities. Eldritch abilities can be unlocked to unleash powerful attacks at the expense of sanity levels. When death inevitably comes the player can utilize the constellations to unlock permanent stat buffs to make the next faceoff against the undead a little more bearable. What will be waiting in the wild when the burden of death becomes too much?
When The Light Dies is coming soon this year to PC via Steam.
