Ragna-ROCKING!
There are many games launched these days that aren’t quite polished to perfection for different reasons. Some titles are just a quick, shoddy cash grabs while others have an incredibly great and fun game beneath the layers that needs a bit of love. Without going into all the insane legal jargon that you can read in full length here, I want to focus on the amazing progress and labor of love for a talented dev team behind this upcoming release after a tough semi-launch last Winter.
First off, a quick disclaimer: As this game is constantly being improved, patched, and bugs squashed daily, the screenshots posted are subject to change. Now, let’s crack on. I was able to spend some quality time with members of the Dev, PR and legal (!) team playing a short online co-op sessions. Overall, I had not only a blast playing a much improved game. but enjoyed spending time with a team not only passionate about their game but willing to take suggestions, feedback, and learn from their past but embrace their future.
With tons of improvements, too many to list here, let’s just say the voice acting additions, combat improvements, more focused questlines and Action RPG feel for the most part, work wonderfully! The biggest surprise was the dungeon runs which were not only gorgeous but a riot to hunt down that oh so sweet loot. Bashing baddies with swords, hammers, axes and the newly built skills trees just felt right and extremely satisfying. Get ready because the weather report calls for showers of baddy gibs o’ plenty.
Choosing a God and their respective powers is a part of the game that has a massive impact on how your characters plays and something I am still tinkering with. Whether you want to focus more on healing, quick rogue like action or just a tank/meatshield, the choices are plentiful and I doubt any two character builds will be the same. While I am partial to Hel, I can’t wait to see what other lore is woven into this near perfect mix of RPG and action.
Now, while some of the game still feels a little wonky such as sailing around, overall, the improvements, especially since the early launch, are YUUGE. Massive. Ginourmous. It’s almost like a completely different game for the better. When I first read the PR statement tied to the game of “Comeback of Year”, I eyerolled a little bit inside. After playing the latest build and my fantastic co-op session with the devs, I am not only stoked for the upcoming launch, I want to spread the word and say this: In a world of massive corporate greed, sometimes steering our favorite franchises into the ground, the team behind Rune II: Decapitation Edition deserve your hard earned gaming dollars.
Check out the trailer below and the Steam store page. The game launches on November 13, 2020 and I’ll be there front and center.
