In case you happened to miss the news (or perhaps you are interested in hearing just one more opinion on the matter) Sony has revealed what the PS5 cases look like for upcoming physical releases. I have spent the last day thinking about the new design and even after all of this time I don’t really know how to feel about it. My initial reaction was pretty neutral to be honest. The blue case keeps with Sony’s trend of releasing games in blue cases that started with the release of the PSVita and remained through the entire PS4 generation. Even late gen PS3 games swapped to a blue label on the top and spine to conform to this new standard while still shipping in standard Blu-ray cases.
The biggest departure for the PS5 case comes from the new white branding. I like how it looks at the top of the case but honestly reminds me of older Xbox 360 cases. The problem I currently have with it is that it is very bland and boring. Again, look to the Xbox 360 game cases to see how subtle rings can dramatically liven up the space! Unlike some other comments I have seen around the net, I don’t mind the contrast of the blue and white. I think it looks fine and with the PS5 color scheme being mostly white it makes sense to keep to both themes. Blue = PlayStation, PS5 = White, it works.
I honestly would have left it at “huh I guess it looks alright” if it hadn’t been for fan renders. Swapping the case to black dramatically alters the appearance and in my mind for the better. Even the renders using a clear case look better to me. Another image I found even swapped the label and spine to black and put it on a white case and it looked fantastic! While these do look better to me I would still love the extra details as I mentioned previously.
We still have a few months before the launch of the PS5. With the number of responses Sony is getting on the design, it will be interesting to see if they change it up before launch. Now that I have shared my thoughts on the design, I would love to hear what you all have to say! Share those thoughts below.
