SUMMERHOUSE Review: No Rules, Only Vibes

SUMMERHOUSE is a small-scalde city building game made by Friedemann, his first solo development project. Let’s see how it did!

Gameplay

SUMMERHOUSE offers a city-building experience without strict rules, providing a refreshing change. With four distinct maps, each with its own layout, it challenges you to think creatively within limited space. The game's essence lies in freedom and creativity; you have the liberty to construct however you please. Initially, I grappled with the concept, stuck in a traditional building mindset. However, once I realized I was crafting just the facade, everything clicked. Placing walls strategically, adding a couple of doors, and tastefully arranging windows, then BOOM a house!

As you build, you have the chance to discover special variations of the existing building blocks. For example, repeating the placement of a tree might unlock a version with a family of owls perched on it. Similarly, frequent use of a window on a house could unlock a variant with an open window and someone leaning out of it. Despite seeming restricted at first, the true limits in this game are the ones you impose on yourself.

Graphics and Audio

SUMMERHOUSE is designed to be a relaxing experience, inviting players to immerse themselves in a world where creativity knows no bounds. The game encourages you to play around, experiment, and let your imagination run wild until you craft something that truly resonates with you. What sets SUMMERHOUSE apart is its visual charm - the graphics are not just aesthetically pleasing but also convey a sense of tranquility. The serene surroundings, though primarily 2D, feel surprisingly vibrant and alive, adding depth to the overall experience. It's a testament to how simplicity can be incredibly captivating and enjoyable in the realm of city-building games.

Feedback

My best advice would be to continue expanding this game. Its charm is undeniable, and I find myself drawn to creating more within it. However, after a certain point, I begin to feel like I've built all I could come up with. Still, considering it's the work of a single developer, the level of achievement is truly impressive.

Verdict

SUMMERHOUSE is a delightful city-building game that removes the typical stress of resource management found in other city builders. Instead, it encourages players to unleash their creativity fully. As I spent time playing and experimenting, I discovered that I was far more creative than I thought.
