Entering Early Access in 2014, The Long Dark is finally ready for official release. For those of you that don’t know, The Long Dark is a first-person survivor simulator set in the North wilderness that focusses on exploration in the midst of a global disaster. Your goal is to survive for as long as you can as you battle the harsh elements, other survivors, hunt for supplies, and avoid becoming prey for dangerous wildlife.
The Early Access version only included the survival sandbox mode but with the official release on August 1, the full game will be launching with an episodic single player. Two episodes will be available at launch and follow the story of Mackenzie and you’ll be given the opportunity to play as Dr. Greenwood in some future episodes. Developer Hinterland has plans to release five episodes throughout 2017 and some of 2018. Although little is known about the actual plot, Creative Director Raphael van Lierop compares it to Cormac McCarthy’s The Road which also helped inspire Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us.
This game is looking promising, offering up a potentially lengthy single player (about 5 hours each episode) and an open world survival mode (approximately 20 square miles large) we could be looking at another indie gem. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on all of the updates for The Long Dark as it gets closer for release August 1.
