If there’s one thing that is sure about the Halloween season, it’s that the LGBTQ+ community stakes claim on it. Through our various contributions to horror culture through portrayals of characters such as Dr. Frank-N-Furter from Rocky Horror Picture Show, screenplays by folks like the Scream franchise’s Kevin Williamson, or even the entirety of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge being a metaphor for the community, there’s so much queer content to enjoy during the spooky season.
But our community’s work goes far beyond films or even music, it’s with games as well. And there are quite a few that players can enjoy during the Halloween season. Whether you’re looking for something truly gruesome or simply haunted whimsy, there’s a lot to enjoy with the 6 queer games we’ve come up with for players to enjoy! So, let’s check them out!
Night in the Woods
Starting out our list is more a fall game than a full-on Halloween title. Night in the Woods is a narrative-driven title that revolves around a young college drop-out named Mae, who returns home for the fall and comes across some new changes that have her questioning things. It’s a cozy title featuring a great story filled with many characters that fall all across the LGBTQ+ community.
Celeste
A personal favorite of mine, Celeste is a title for players that enjoy a good puzzle platformer. Though the majority of the game doesn’t host many haunts, there are several areas that allow players to traverse a haunted mansion that’s being overwhelmed with a grieving spirit. It’s a game that’s story is perfect for its targeted Trans audience, but is one that anyone could enjoy and empathize with.
Monster Prom
If you love a good romance RPG, then Monster Prom is a great choice. It’s really just a chance to kick back and flirt amongst a rabble of ghosts and ghouls from all across the haunted spectrum and from multiple genders too. There are actually several titles from this series, so why not try a couple this season?
The Last of Us: Part II
If you’re looking for action, then there’s no doubt that The Last of Us: Part II should be your next title to play this spook month, It’s a gory game with a story about love at its center. While much of the story has to do with Ellie’s revenge, there’s a lot going on between her and the budding sapphic relationship she has with fellow survivor Dina which makes our hearts swoon.
Gone Home
One of the first true queer games to be big, Gone Home is more or less a haunted house game for players to play if they’re too scared to actually play something like Madison. Nothing scary happens but there is a somewhat somber vibe to the entire game which helps to drive this feeling of loneliness and isolation, which is very effective.
Calico
Another lighter title, Calico is simply a life-sim game where players get to be a witch and run a cat cafe. It’s as simple as that. It’s a beautiful game though where the gender diverse cast of characters are as friendly as they are pretty to look at. It’s the best title to play if you’re looking for some pastel cottage-core witchiness in your life.
