AFK Journey breaks the mold of classic idle RPGs, diverging from expectations in a refreshing way. Despite its name suggesting an idle experience, it's actually a sequel to AFK Arena and offers a well-thought-out gameplay experience on both mobile and PC platforms.
The iOS version is particularly suited for on-the-go gaming, designed for one-handed play. In AFK Journey, you delve into an open-world RPG where you embark on a narrative journey, assist NPCs with side quests, uncover new territories, gather heroes, and engage in battles using a hex-style combat system.
The battle mechanics resemble an auto chess brawler, but with five distinct factions, strategic possibilities abound. My initial pull of a Graveborn gold hero intrigued me, leading me to build a squad around that faction. Each faction boasts a unique roster of heroes, granting bonuses for using heroes from the same faction.
Diverse classes add another layer of complexity. Heroes span Rogue, Warrior, Tank, Mage, Marksman, and Support classes, each with distinct abilities. I was impressed by the significant differences between heroes within the same class and faction, showcasing the game's depth, especially considering it's a free-to-play (FTP) mobile title.
Speaking of its FTP model, AFK Journey stands out. Unlike many FTP games that heavily emphasize grinding for premium currency, AFK Journey offers a more balanced experience. The AFK feature allows heroes to auto-brawl while offline, leading to rewards upon returning, often including gems. Daily and growth quests also provide ample gem rewards, making AFK Journey feel rewarding without excessive monetization tactics.

I have to admit, the character design and the graphics in AFK Journey are very impressive, especially for a mobile game.
