Desmond “Etika” Amofah’s body has been positively identified by the NYPD. The NYPD responded to a 9-11 call yesterday near the South Street Seaport where the body was discovered. Etika had been on a downward spiral since last October when his struggles with mental illness started becoming public. In April, Etika was detained in his apartment for threatening suicide. In May, Etika had another altercation with law enforcement. Both incidents resulted in a hospital stay. Last week Etika published a video goodbye and his personal belongings, including his Nintendo Switch, were later found at the Manhattan Bridge.
Mental health is an ongoing issue affecting many. If you or anyone you know has been dealing with these issues reach out, let them know you are there or need help. You can also reach the National Suicide Prevention Hotline 24 hours a day. If you live outside the United States, a number for your local organization can be found here. On behalf of GT I want to express my deepest condolences to Etika’s friends and family in this trying time. He will be missed.
