Excitement Builds for Valheim as PS5 and Switch 2 Release Looms

by Guest User

Valheim, the sandbox survival title that puts players in the shoes of struggling Vikings looking to re-establish themselves as powerful figures fit for Valhalla, has been much discussed since its first early access release in 2021. Having been under development since 2017, it has been one of the most anticipated titles in indie gaming for almost a decade.

The saga of its full release appears to be nearing an end, though, with 2026 set to be the year we finally see Valheim receive its 1.0 update, alongside releases for the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. That means that on the fifth anniversary of its initial release, it will be complete, allowing fans to finally enjoy the game in all its glory.

With September 2026 set to be the final major update before the game is considered complete, what can players expect? Most importantly, though, how are Vikings still such a popular option for games of all different types in the 2020s?

The Viking Spirit Continues to Inspire Players Globally

This is just the latest in a long list of games that have focused on Vikings or Norse mythology to great success. In recent years, huge series like Assassin’s Creed and God of War have dipped into the theme, and that is just on the Triple-A side of things. These games received universal praise from both critics and players alike.

Away from the world of console gaming, even the iGaming industry has a storied history with the Viking theme. Visit any online casino, and you will find a wide range of slot games in different themes, but the Norse are heavily represented. Titles like Le Viking, Masters of Valhalla, and Viking Forge are some of the most popular options on the homepages of a number of operators.

All of these point to the fact that people are actively seeking out this genre. It is not just games, either, as was evident when shows like Vikings became global successes. At the 2026 World Cup, even Norway’s soccer fans won over their US hosts by celebrating their presence with Viking claps and rowing routines.

Valheim Sure to Bag Even More Critical Acclaim with Final Release

When Valheim was initially released, it was an instant success. A review in PC Gamer described the game as “challenging and rewarding”, while highlighting that it felt “refined and satisfying”. The reviewer pointed out that, while this was the case for Valheim, it is not typically the case for games in alpha or early access.

Since then, its updates have continued to achieve strong reviews, and there is no indication that the 1.0 release will be any different. With roughly six updates since entering early access, it has grown into a popular choice on both PC and console, including Xbox Series X/S. PS5 owners have had to wait a couple of years longer, but will be anticipating September’s release with bated breath.

So far, the game has sold more than 10 million copies on Steam alone, so it is likely that the final release on two of the most popular consoles will bring with it even stronger sales. If it manages to achieve a strong cross-console audience, it could even possibly breach the top 50 best-selling games at around the 25 million mark.

But even if those numbers weren’t achieved, it has already proved to be a great success for its developer, Iron Gate Studio. It also represents one of the most successful Viking video game properties of all time, which is even more impressive given its positioning outside of the Triple-A market as a bona fide indie title. When it releases its final update on September 9, it is sure to be an exciting time for Valheim fans.
