EXCLUSIVE Riftbound: Radiance Card Reveal

As Riftbound gets bigger and better, the community surrounding the game continues to grow. Here at GameTyrant, we’re grateful to be part of that community and to have been offered our own exclusive spoiler card for the new Riftbound: Radiance set.

New Riftbound: Radiance card reveal

The card we’re revealing today is Avalanche, an uncommon spell with the potential to damage an entire board:

“Deal 3 to all units in bases.”

Check out the full card below.

One thing Riftbound doesn’t have a ton of is board-wide effects, so seeing a card that can enable one last push is great. This is the kind of card that could devastate Legends that rely on large numbers of smaller units, such as Viktor or Azir.

How to use Avalanche

Avalanche is a great card for making a final push or saving yourself from defeat. If you’re being swarmed by token units or low-cost, low-Might units, this is the kind of card that can help reset the board.

Imagine the Battlefields are overrun with 2-Might Sand Soldiers from Azir’s army. Your opponent is at 7 points, while you’re at 6 points with only two ready units. Cast Avalanche, and it will deal 3 damage to each unit in the bases, clearing the way for you to make your own attack and win.

Yes, that’s an incredibly specific scenario, but it’s entirely possible! It’s also the perfect scenario for Avalanche.

First impressions of Avalanche

This card is built for the sideboard. Maybe one copy finds its way into your main deck, but keeping it in your sideboard allows you to bring it in when it can actually hurt your opponent.

The main problem is that it doesn’t have “Action” or “Reaction.” Without either of those keywords, it’s much harder to fit Avalanche into your main deck.

Where Avalanche fits

This card is great for the sideboard of Aurora decks, or really any deck that focuses on Mighty units. Avalanche deals 3 damage, so as long as your units have more than 3 Might, they’ll be fine.

However, as I mentioned, this is a play-from-behind card. You won’t cast Avalanche when you control all the Battlefields. You’ll want to cast it when you need to reduce the total Might across the Battlefields and create an opening for yourself.

In the end, Avalanche is a spell that I don’t think will see a ton of main-deck play. However, it makes for a good sideboard option because once you realize, “Oh, this card would devastate their board state,” it becomes a much stronger card.
