Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was an interesting entry in the Final Fantasy Franchise back in 2003. The then GameCube exclusive dabbled in local co-op play utilizing the GameCube to GBA link cables with the main action happening on a TV while personal actions occurred on the small screen. It was an interesting idea but one that suffered the same fate as games like The Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures, hardly anyone had 4 GameCube to GBA link cables and friends that wanted to play it.
When it was announced that the game would be getting a modern release across Nintendo Switch, PS4, and mobile devices, I was excited by the idea! Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition would finally let friends play across distance and without the need of additional hardware that was never adopted. Sadly the game has been hit with a number of delays since its original announcement and has sort of become a running joke between me and a few friends. It looks like the joke is finally over though as the game has received a new trailer that has announced the release date of the game to be August 27.
The trailer also shows off a number of improvements that are coming to the game including English voice work for the first time, reworked UI, updated soundtrack, and of course, an HD presentation. What is most exciting to me though is that crossplay multiplayer has been announced so no matter where you decide to purchase the game you will be able to jump into it with your friends! To make this even easier, a new Lite edition has been announced that will include the games first 3 dungeons available to play in full online co-op. Even crazier is that if even one person in your friend group owns the full game all Lite players can access 13 dungeons while playing in co-op!
That is an insanely generous move on Square Enix’s part and I think it will greatly help the game get more attention! Multiplayer functionality has always been what made Crystal Chronicles fun for me and seeing it become more widely available is going to be amazing. Thanks to the announcement of crossplay, I now don’t have to worry about picking it up on PS4 or Switch either!
