2019 officially draws to a close, which means that it is time to announce our top 5 games of 2019! This list was voted upon by members of our writing staff from over 20 total entries. I still can't believe just how good of a year 2019 was for games with the likes of Death Stranding, Borderlands 3, Jedi: Fallen Order, Luigi's Mansion 3, Pokemon, Bloodstained, and Sekiro. Sadly not every game can make our best-of list this year, so as follows is the GameTyrant top 5 games of 2019!
Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 was a pretty big deal when it releases earlier this year. Most fans feared that new entries of the series would continue along the route set by Ninja Theory's reboot DMC. Even though I enjoyed DMC personally and the game itself was well made it was very divisive. Even I have to admit though coming back to a story set post Devil May Cry 4 is pretty freaking awesome! Not only that, just about everything we see in the game is the best the franchise has ever seen. If you have been holding off on playing Devil May Cry 5 there is no time like the present! Especially for you Xbox One owners out there that have Game Pass, you really have no excuse.
Control
Control is pretty great! Even if I didn't find the powers featured in the game to be the most original there is no denying that they are fun to use. The setting and story were also awesome and each new tidbit to learn left me with eager anticipation. Being Remedy's first game after their split with Microsoft I imagine there were a lot of expectations for the game. What Remedy delivered, I feel, hit those expectations and more giving us a game that I am still exploring and learning more about. If you missed this one back in August, definitely try it out.
Apex Legends
Apex Legends shook up the battle royale scene with its surprise launch back in February. The game saw unprecedented growth within its first few days and weeks leading many to believe that the Fortnite craze might have finally met its match. But, as we all know the numbers and growth didn't continue like during that opening salvo and Fortnite still reigns supreme. Apex is currently near the end of its third season and the game has added and taken away, a number of features to keep changing up how the game plays. New characters have been introduced with many more on the way. The fast-paced battles, quick movement, and overall style of the game have really made Apex stand out among the crowd. If you haven't been into other br games give Apex a shot you might find you enjoy it!
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2 is still considered to be one of the best survival horror games ever made with its great setting and story. After 20 years the game has gotten the remake treatment bringing every aspect of the classic title into the modern era. Resident Evil 2 Remake once again has us fill the shoes of Leon and Claire as they explore the remains of Racoon City and the infamous RCPD. This time around zombies are tougher and the suspense is greater as the hulking Mr. X is an ever-present threat chasing you from room to room. In a console generation that has been dominated by re-releases, Resident Evil 2 Remake really was a fresh breath of air showing how to do a proper remake and make one of 2019's best titles!
Game Of The Year
Ace Combat 7
Ace Combat 7 might be one of the most important games in the entirety of the Ace Combat franchise. After a series of underwhelming releases following 2007's Ace Combat 6, it really seemed like the franchise had fizzled out. Then Ace Combat 7 was announced and the claim was it was going to bring the series back to its roots. After a series of delays, Ace Combat 7 finally arrived in player’s hands back in January and the promise of bringing the series back to its roots was delivered! The game picks up years after the events of Ace Combat 5 and we get to see how the world has changed. Players assume the role of Trigger as he tries to bring a new war to an end. In signature Ace Combat style the story has a number of twists. The visuals of the game are some of the absolute best of the year and those clouds!! Honestly, I could go on and on about how awesome the game was but I think I will just go play it again. You should all do the same. To Kazutoki Kono, Project Aces, and Bandai Namco thank you for an amazing game and Congratulations on winning GameTyrant's 2019 game of the year!
Here are the results of our 2019 vote just in case you were wondering just how close of a decision it was this year for the coveted goty crown.
