GeekOn! started in 2018 by focusing on how to better take care of games, when playing and when transporting these fragile but lovely boxes of bliss. So, the team started figuring out ways to design bags, trays, cases, and more. It all started with The Ultimate Boardgame Backpack, a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that raised almost $1 million from nearly 6,000 backers.

Since then, the NYC-based company has expanded to provide other products that gamers would use to make their lives less messy and protect the cardboard gold that makes a game night so special.

I’ve been reviewing games for more than a year now, so I thought it high time to look at all of the peripherals that make gaming easier.

That starts with the Taco Bit Case, a set of four little cases that can compartmentalize components into a classy kind of anti-clutter. Alliteration aside, let’s jump into what you get.

What’s In The Box

With a single order, you’ll get a set of four Taco Bit Cases. These serve more than one function, as both portable trays to hold components during play and storage containers that can reside in game boxes in between gaming sessions.

You must no longer be plagued by plastic bags.

Or Fantasy Flight cardboard troughs. Or whatever the absurd concave insert in the Betrayal at House on the Hill is called.

Aesthetics And Design

The design is light and compact, which will definitely be beneficial when either using it at the table or stowing it in a boardgame box.

A netted center allows you to mostly see what’s inside, which shouldn’t be much of a problem if you have it in a particular game. When zipped up, the case resembles a stuffed soft taco. When unzipped and stuffed with components, it makes a nice and wide squat open cylinder for easy access when playing.

Since it’s only going to be used in conjunction with board game pieces—unless you have other ideas for it—then I think the build quality will hold up well over time. The stitches seem durable, and the zipper is nice and thick with an easy pull loop to reduce time and strain.

Personally, I like simple color schemes, so the black and red design appeals to me. It’s not garishly-colored. It’s not offensive to the eye. And it should blend into many game boxes without much thought. It’s dual-use is also a plus.

Gameplay Use

There are plenty of games that could use these taco bit cases.

For ones that don’t provide plastic baggies. Or that don’t have enough storage compartments. For games that have pieces that look alike. Or whatever.

I see a lot of potential for cases that can both stow away components and hold them snugly during a game.

I’m thinking of board games that have a lot of resources for players to gather. Or faction-specific pieces to keep in play around the board.

And if you’re the spendy kind, you can get a lot of these to keep in all of the games that lack in organization and insert quality.

What It Could Have Done Better

Getting six cases instead of four would have been nice. That would have accommodated games with higher player counts for those that are looking to use these as component trays.

The design is nice, though, and it will help to keep everything separate when boxed up and when playing.

Again, I think a higher number of cases would have been better.

Verdict

For $35, some people might find these cases a little pricey, but gamers who are looking for something to organize their games are generally willing to spend more to invest in the durability and longevity of their most prized games.

I’d like to see a pack of six for the same price, but the Taco Bit Case set from GeekOn! is a great supplement to a gamer’s collection by providing a dual-function product that both protects and organizes the little pieces that make a big game run smoothly. They’re easy on the eyes and relaxing for every nervous gamer out there who’s looking for the next thing to update and to safeguard their board game collection.
