One of the most praised and respected modern games of recent memory, formerly a PlayStation console exclusive, God of War has now triumphantly burst onto PC. With a whole slew of improvements, new control options, and graphical uplifts, let’s dive into what makes this already fantastic game, one of the best PC ports in recent memory. This version of the game is a stunning achievement, a title that should not be missed by any serious gamer.
Story and Gameplay
For most story and gameplay details, you can reference our original PS4 review. The same incredibly moving and stunning game looks and plays better than ever. Although much can be said about this game, I think that those who were turned off by the original series should give this a serious look if they haven’t up to this point. While the action is present, it’s the characters and relationships during quiet moments that truly shine above the gore and bone-breaking brutality of it all.
While the base story and content are the same for this PC release, the control options are varied and for the most part, are absolutely fantastic. The option to switch between full keyboard and mouse controls, which by the way, works surprisingly well for the action-heavy gameplay present in God of War, to Xbox controllers to PS5 controllers perform flawlessly.
Audio and Visual
To call God of War, especially the PC version, simply beautiful would still be a massive understatement. The different realms and environments here are rendered with a huge amount of detail. The PC version ups the ante with a ton of performance-related options and tweaks that aren’t present on any console version of the game, even the recent PS5 update. DLSS, high-resolution shadows, ultrawide, and high FPS options are all present and make the game look stellar.
The audio portion of the game is equally impressive through the loudest earth-shattering moments to the quiet whispers and touching moments between Kratos and his son. The orchestral soundtrack is also notable and on our Sound Blaster Katana V2, it absolutely rocked.
God of War is a reference level showcase on every level in the audio-visual arena and absolutely loved every moment playing it.
Replayability and What Could Be Better
While most would probably be fine with one play through there are still tons of armor and weapons to find and craft throughout the game combined with some off-the-beaten-path secrets to uncover as well. Building up skills and upgrades is super satisfying so combing every inch of what seems more like a linear game really opens up as you progress. There is a ton to do and see especially for the $49.99 price tag that is more than worth it value wise.
Overall, this PC port is fantastic and a bright glimmer of hope that Sony continues to not only support PC but that embrace it openly. With recent shifts in the gaming industry, it seems putting quality gaming titles in the hands of as many gamers as possible should truly be the unified goal. On the technical side of things, the two major features lacking the control of Depth of Field during gameplay and a FOV slider. Other than that, this is one of the best ports in recent memory.
Verdict
In the end, I highly recommend God of War PC to anyone that wants to experience this incredible journey whether it be the first or tenth time you’ve played through the game. The price is right, the PC-centric features are plentiful, and it’s a wonderfully executed PC port that continues to be patched. Even with lower end card combined with DLSS, you can enjoy this stunning game in full graphical fidelity.
God of War is available now on Steam and Epic Games Store.
