Introducing Edge of Eternities – Magic: The Gathering… In Spaaaaaaace!

The Lore Behind Edge of Eternities

Welcome to the final frontier of Magic: The Gathering. Edge of Eternities isn’t science fiction—it’s science fantasy, taking Magic to the outermost reaches of the multiverse. Set in the cosmic region of Sothera, a region orbiting a dying sun, this set zooms in on a small but vital slice of the universe rather than the entire galactic layer.

Sothera is home to five planets, each thematically tied to a different color of mana. These planets are populated by brand-new sci-fi-inspired races:

  • The Eumidians – Insectoid humanoids who thrive through a practice called Terrasymbiosis (also a card), allowing them to adapt to their environment—and mold the planet to adapt to them.

  • The Drix – An ancient and elusive guardian species with the ability to warp step across dimensions. Seen as the guardians (of the galaxy?) because they have seen the destruction before and will do everything to stop it from happening again.

  • Pinnacle – A recently established interplanetary governing body striving to keep peace across the Sothera system.

Of course, with peace comes opposition. The Monoists, who revere black holes and the end of all things, are locked in a brutal war with the Sun Star Free Company and their elite warriors, the Solar Knights—devotees of a radiant sun and the Bright Sum, a cosmic equation aimed at maximizing good in the universe.

This conflict is known as the Entropic War, a struggle that spans the present and extends trillions of years into the future—until the very Heat Death of the universe. With the SSFC’s last hope being a colossal starship known as the Horizon Javelin, capable of reigniting stars—aimed squarely at saving Sothera itself.

New Card Styles

This set’s visuals are unlike anything Magic has done before. Here's a breakdown:

Celestial Basic Lands: Full-art, borderless lands that beautifully embody the vastness of open space. They’re available in both Play and Collector Boosters, and Collector Boosters offer a chance at Galaxy Foil versions (from Unfinity).

Borderless Viewport Lands: New tap lands that double as visual “windows” into the alien worlds of Sothera. Each includes station abilities.

Borderless Stellar Sights: These cards pop with dramatic color and cosmic energy. Only available in rare and mythic rare slots, with a 1-in-8 chance in Play Boosters. Collector Boosters may contain nostalgic Poster versions that scream Tomorrowland vibes.

Borderless Surreal Space: Designed to evoke 1970s sci-fi pulp fiction covers. These cards feel like they’re telling full stories all on their own.

Borderless Special Guest: Hands down my favorite style—cards like Nexus of Fate and Sliver Overlord look straight out of vintage sci-fi comics. Absolutely gorgeous, and! they’re coming to Arena too.

Japanese Showcase Art: Think retro Kaiju-era sci-fi. It’s bold, unique, and distinctly stylish.

Headline Series: A new visual treatment that surely looks much better in person than in previews. These are going to stand out.

New Mechanics

  • Station: Used on spacecraft and planets. Tap your creatures to generate charge counters equal to their power. Once the threshold is hit, spacecraft turn into creatures. Planets, however, remain as strategic permanents.

  • Warp: A fast-paced mechanic that lets you cast creatures at a discount—but only for one turn before they're exiled. Later, you can pay full cost to cast them again, making it great for ETB effects.

  • Void: Similar to Morbid. These cards gain enhanced effects if a nonland permanent left the battlefield that turn, or if you warped a card that turn.

  • Lander Tokens: Replacing treasure tokens with something more permanent. Pay 2 and sacrifice a Lander to search your library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped. A sleek new take on mana acceleration.

And of course, all the standard products are coming: booster boxes, bundles, prerelease kits, and more.
