Quick Review - Blades of Fire 2.0: Blood and Glory

Story and Gameplay

Blades of Fire 2.0 is still the same hidden gem we fell in love with the first time around, now polished up and re-released with our review version on Steam with a handful of new features that make an already great experience even better. The core loop remains intact, this is a game that rewards patience and mastery, and the tweaks here feel purposeful rather than tacked on. That said, the learning curve hasn't gone anywhere; the combat system takes time to click, the UI can feel unintuitive in spots, and quirks like the map navigation are still present and accounted for. But once it all starts to gel, there's really nothing else quite like it out there, and at its current price point, it's absolutely worth your time.

Exploring the nooks, crannies, character designs and intricacies of this unique experience are still some of the greatest strengths, a rarity in a gaming market full of quick, simply dopamine hits.

Graphics and Audio

Visually, this game is a stunner. The environments are absolutely gorgeous, dripping with detail and atmosphere that pull you deeper into every new area you discover. MercurySteam's signature character designs are on full display: Bold, distinctive, and instantly recognizable, giving the whole cast a look that sets it apart from anything else on the market.

Pair that with a crushing, heavy-hitting audio design that lands every impact and fills every space, and you've got a genuine audiovisual treat that's worth soaking in even when you're not swinging a blade.

Verdict

Blades of Fire 2.0 is admittedly an acquired taste, and I'll be the first to say I enjoyed it more than some folks out there will. The UI still has rough edges, and playing with keyboard and mouse can feel like it's fighting you at times, controller players will have a smoother ride. I do wish there were more improvements in the areas mentioned especially with the UI and crafting but it’s definitely not a deal breaker.

In the end, if you've been craving something different, something that breaks from the usual formula and offers a genuine breath of fresh air, this is your game. Give it the time it asks for, and it gives back in spades.
