SCUF Xbox Wireless Pro Controller Review: A Worthwhile Step Up

For many, the concept of buying a third-party controller seems weird. The console comes with one, so why would you need another? I was on that track of mind for quite some time and, in a way, still am. However, after using the new SCUF Wireless Valor Pro for Xbox, I can definitely see the appeal, especially for longtime gamers.

Gameplay

As this was my first go-around with a new controller, I took a bit longer with it, trying out all the nooks and crannies. From simple games like Balatro to FPS titles like Titanfall 2, I ran the gambit to see the differences. For certain, using it for shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield is the best way to truly experience the controller. The button mapping on the back lets you not have to take your fingers off anything and do things seamlessly.

While I still defaulted to using the buttons from time to time, the paddles were pretty handy in building the immersion. For example, the paddles in Titanfall 2 let you jump and slide. So, easily pulling off slide shots and wallrunning felt incredible and nice. I will say that, at times, it got in the way, especially the ones on the grip.

Aesthetics and Build Quality

I received the Black Ops 7 version, which sports a neat grey shattered icon with the game’s logo on the side. While the entry is far from my favorite, the decals are really cool and fit the overall aesthetic of the controller. The designs are interchangeable, so you can switch them out at your leisure, which is a cool addition.

Customizability is key with the controller, as almost every part of it is interchangeable. Trying out the different ways to play was half the fun. It made the experience of playing on a controller that much more comfortable and unique to you.

Verdict

You really don’t get this level of customization with standard controllers, and SCUF has been at the top of their game with it for a while. The Wireless Valor Pro feels like the company’s elite controller, nailing everything players would want from a third-party controller. Speaking from experience, if you’re going to get a new controller, you can’t go wrong with this one.
